Step Sing for the Great Class of 2029 and Transfer Student Cohort!
The tradition of step singing began in 1760 when graduating seniors gathered on the steps of Nassau Hall to sing their favorite songs to an audience of students and town residents. The custom became more elaborate throughout the years, with the junior class rushing the steps at Commencement to symbolically claim their place for the following academic year. The practice of step singing fell dormant as World War II fractured a succession of classes; however, the custom was revived in the early 1960s, when senior classes assembled on Blair Arch’s steps in the evening following Baccalaureate.
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the University in 2006, students of all classes gathered on the historic steps of Nassau Hall with the Princeton University Band and Glee Club to sing traditional Princeton songs.
